PITTSBURG — It’s time to get out the shears and get a back to school haircut.
For over the past decade, Victory Life Church has hosted the Back2School haircut event for children in pre-K through 12th grade.
It all started with approximately 30 children, three hair stylists and was originally at hair salons. Now the event is hosted annually at Victory Life Church at 681 US-69, Pittsburg.
This year, Victory Life Church Pastor Donnie Talent said he hopes they can serve over 500 students. Last year, 430 students participated in the event.
“We do it to reach the community, because you just can't replace community,” Talent said. “I think it’s a great, one day they will look back one day and say our community is really cool.
“Another reason is we want to share God’s love and let them know someone cares.”
Children must be signed up by calling the church’s office at 620-232-1150 in order to receive a haircut. Signing up includes a chance of receiving school supplies and clothes. The haircuts, school supplies and clothes are free.
The clothes are a new option this year for families.
“They can take a look and see if there is anything they can use for their kids,” Talent said.
There will be 40 hair stylists this year, each will work various time slots which the child would be signed up for. The time slots are between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13.
The event is supported by local sponsors and partners from the community.
Westar Energy, the United Way of Southeast Kansas and Southwest Missouri, GNBank have teamed up to collect school supplies.
Talent said local support helped make the event possible.
If people would like to donate items or be involved there are still opportunities and they can call the church for more information.
“The more community involvement, the happier we are,” Talent said.
This year there will be many activities which include, but are not limited to: Crawford County EMS truck tour, Westar bucket ride, BBQ dinner, Purple Pie Toss (at Pittsburg School teachers), Dunk-a-cop and Baker Fire Department. These activities are free to attend.
This year the church is partnering with Widows Sons to host a Back2School Biker Run on Saturday. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast at the church. All proceeds go to the Back2School event. People can contact the church for more information.
