GIRARD — Cajun Fest started as a happy accident and it continues five years later.
A handful of music fans gathered with musician Waylon Thibodeaux, “Louisiana’s Rockin’ Fiddler” for a dinner event.
There was left over money after the cost of the dinner, so the group decided to give the rest of the money to Girard School District for its scholarship fund. Since then, they have raised several thousand dollars.
One of the sponsors, John Lehman, said it the group decided to put on the event the following year to raise scholarship money for the USD 248 Educational Foundation Scholarship Fund.
“We’re excited this year, this fifth year and every year it gets bigger,” Lehman said.
A new record of sponsors was set this year, Lehman said.
“It has far exceeded our expectations,” Lehman said. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support.”
Cajun Fest V will be on Saturday at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.
