PITTSBURG — The Crawford County Diaper Stock is asking residents to break out their favorite pinterest pins and create diaper cakes to help local babies.

The group is holding their second annual diaper cake competition Tuesday, September 25 at the Pittsburg Meadowbrook Mall. The event will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. with contestants dropping their cakes off a half hour before the event begins.

During the hours of display each cake will have a jar in front of it. The cake with the most donations will be declared the winner. Contestants can raise money before the event to add to their jar as well. Participants can add baby accessories to their cakes which will be given to a local teen pregnancy program.

Following the contest the diaper cakes will be disassembled and put into circulation in the program. Volunteers for the diaper event request that cakes be put together with rubber bands as much as possible for easy to take apart.

Dacia White, the head volunteer for the organization said the diaper cake contest is very important for the program. According to White, the Crawford County Diaper Stock gave away thousands of diapers last year, some of which came from their cake event.

“Diapers are not covered by food stamps, and can be a real hardship for some families,” White said. “We are able to offer them some diapers to get them through, and get them in touch with organizations and programs that can help them long term.”

Volunteers in the program are from several local organizations including Pittsburg Police Department, Crawford County Health Center, and United School District 250.

“We hope that this program helps people to worry a little less about just making it day to day, so they are able to enjoy their baby,” volunteer Katie Douglas said.
