BAXTER SPRINGS — On Baxter Springs’ Winter Homecoming night the Lady Raiders fell behind the Lady Lions 13-6 after the first period. Baxter Springs’ senior Abbey Underhill scored in every quarter to end with 27 points, with 9 in the opening period. She also finished her double-double night with 12 rebounds, plus she had 4 steals. Underhill grabbed a 45-34 victory.

After Raider sophomore Abby Butcher's field goal to start the second quarter, Baxter Springs increased their lead 19-8 on a six point run. The Lady Raiders finished the half with a field goal and a free throw from junior Karma Fields.

Butcher started the second half with a 3-pointer. Junior Delaney Barnes added a two and a three for a ten-point Lady Lion spread 24-14. Baxter Springs ended the third period with another run with 5 points. Baxter Springs scored 25 points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for a final of 45-34. Underhill scored 10 points in the period.

Butcher led the Lady Raiders with 8 points with her two 3-pointers. Fields added 6 points for Frontenac. Barnes for the Lady Lions finished with 11 points, including two 3-pointers. She also grabbed 8 rebounds, and had 2 block shots.

Lions Cap off Sweet Homecoming  

Baxter Springs and Frontenac played a close game until the fourth quarter. The Lions pulled out the victory winning 80-68. Baxter Springs stayed on top the first half with a 17-13 lead in the opening period, and 41-35 at the half.

The Raiders took a temporary lead 43-42 in the second half with 1 ½ minutes gone on a field goal by senior Cooper Cleland. The Lions junior Kyler Reece made good on two free throws, and a basket. After a foul on Frontenac a technical foul was called on Frontenac’s bench which allowed junior Brant Morris to sink two free throws. Senior Trey White made 1 of 2 free throws from the technical with the score now 49-43.

Freshman Collin McCartney dropped a trey, then a 2 plus 1 to put the Raiders up 51-49. The score was tied at 53 after baskets by Reece and Cleland, and White scoring underneath. Sophomore Alex Storey put the Raiders at 55, but at the buzzer sophomore Kain McCully knotted the third at 55.

Baxter Springs outscored Frontenac the fourth quarter 26-13. Reece netted 8 of his final 27 in the quarter. Reece made good on 1 of 2 free throws, scored on a drive, then on a put back. Senior, and Homecoming King, Tucker Graves added a 2 plus 1 to put the Lions up 63-55. Junior Hayden Pile and McCartney added field goals to close the gap 63-59. A technical foul on a Raider player after a shooting foul put Morris at the line. Morris added a free throw, plus his 2 points. White connected on his two technical free throws. This changed the momentum and closed the gate on Frontenac as Baxter Springs added 11 more points for their final 80.

White finished with 14 points with 6 for 6 free throws for the Lions. Graves added 9. Senior Blake Thiessen with his three 3-pointers finished with 9 also. Frontenac had five players in double figures. Off the bench, McCartney scored 11 of his final 13 in the second half. Cleland had 12 points, and Bridwell had 11. Senior Noah Brooks scored all of his 10 points in the first half. Pile also finished with 10 points.
