PITTSBURG — To help the older athletes participate in an event that fits with their lifestyle, Special Olympics hosts senior group gatherings for athletes.
Once a month the athletes from Mosaic and New Hope go to the Homer Cole Pittsburg Community Center to play games.
"Naturally as they get older, maybe they are not as much into the physical activities that traditional Special Olympics is about," said Terri Price, the Special Olympics Southeast Kansas regional sports director. "But Special Olympics, when you get to the heart of it, it’s about enriching people’s lives. So as people get older, naturally they look to activities that fit their lifestyle."
On Friday, the group ate snacks and played a game of bingo. Carol Jean Kamrey said she looks forward to coming to the events.
"I think it is cool, I like coming here, I really love it," she said.
