FORT SCOTT, Kan. — Authorities located a body believed to be that of a missing kayaker in Lake Fort Scott this week.
Emergency crews began searching for Raymond Harper, 19, of Fort Scott, on Sunday after his friends recovered his kayak but couldn’t find him. Agencies including the Fort Scott police and fire departments, Fort Scott Rural Fire, the Bourbon County Sheriff’s Department and Emergency Medical Services, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism assisted with search.
A helicopter was called in to help during the first day of the search, before authorities made a decision to halt the search at 1:15 a.m. Monday and reconvene at daylight.
When the search resumed, the Kansas Highway Patrol joined in the effort and dive teams were brought in from other counties before a body that is believed to be Harper’s was found Monday afternoon, the Fort Scott Police Department said in a news release. The body was sent to Kansas City for an autopsy.
