There’s a worldwide pandemic. Saharan dust filled the air making beautiful sunsets. Kanye West is apparently running for president. Tom Brady is playing for the Buccaneers. Joe Exotic is the surprise hit of Netflix, which is also streaming a game show called "The Floor is Lava." The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism is testing to see if fish are dying of herpes. There’s an alligator loose in Manhattan.

Did anyone have any of that on their Bingo card for this year? Anyone?

Can someone hurry up and get a Bingo so maybe we can get back to some semblance of normalcy? Does anyone know where to get disinfectant wipes?

As we reach the halfway mark it’s safe to say 2020 has been a year for strange news. That’s really a special feat in the era of fake news. Then again, a worldwide pandemic, an unemployment crisis and an election year bring strange things out of the woodwork.

There’s been a lot of strange things happening in 2020, sure, but as a news organization, we’re obligated to point out that weird news is not limited to a single year. It’s always there if you look for it. Perhaps the weird news of 2020 instead is just on a larger scale and thus makes it easier to shrug our shoulders when we hear something bizarre.

We’ve seen a lot of people making jokes about 2020. For those on the internet, this year has been meme gold. Some of it gallows humor. Some of it pointing out the absurdity of this diversion from the normal we’ve grown accustomed to. Some of it is really stressed people trying as best they can to cope. Maybe all of that rolled into one.

Levity has power. In times of crisis, it can help us get by, but it also can sometimes go too far.

Please use it for good. We’ve seen plenty of examples where a joke can go too far and cross a line that was never meant to.

There’s nothing wrong with laughter. It’s one of the greatest forms of medicine, but please remember as you make light of a crappy situation that people have died, others have lost their jobs and many are struggling. Let’s not make light of the harsher realities this year has brought on one another. Instead, let’s focus on what can make everyone chuckle —maybe a nice internet cat. That might do the trick.
