JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Pittsburg State women’s basketball team made it a clean sweep on the road Saturday as they came away with a 77-63 win over Lincoln at Jason Gym.
The Gorillas (15-4, 9-4 MIAA) jumped out to an early lead over the Blue Tigers and pushed it as high as 20 points in the second half. Lincoln finished the game out with an 11-6 run, but the PSU lead was never in any serious jeopardy.
Senior Cathy Brugman led all scorers with 23 points. She had a team-high five rebounds in the win. Brugman made all seven free-throw attempts.
Pitt State had three players reach double figures, with sophomore Mikaela Burgess scoring 18 points in the win. She was 2 for 6 from 3-point range and made all six free throws. She tied for second on the team in assists with three.
Sophomore Elena Flott had 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting. She made both her attempts from 3-point range, and added two rebounds and a block.
Senior forward Kyle Gafford had six points and a team-high three blocks.
Pitt State had a slight scoring drought to start the second half, which led to the Blue Tigers cutting the lead to single digits, but an 11-2 run by PSU established their momentum for the remainder of the game.
The Gorillas shot 49 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the arc as a team.
Pitt State returns home for a matchup against No. 10 Missouri Western at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at John Lance Arena.
Gorilla men come up short against Blue Tigers
In a game of runs, the Pittsburg State men missed a potential game-tying shot in closing moments of the contest to fall 68-63 to Lincoln Saturday at Jason Gym.
Trey Starks had a chance to tie the game for the Gorillas (10-9, 5-8 MIAA) with a look from long range with seconds remaining, but the shot missed off the iron with the Blue Tigers getting a run out at the other end to seal the win.
Starks led the Gorillas in scoring with 22 points on 7-of-14 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers. He was 6 of 7 form the free-throw line. Starks grabbed five rebounds and added an assist.
Senior Josiah Gustafson had 19 points in the loss, making 6 of 11 shots from the field. He had three assists, one block and a steal.
Jaxon Holden had nine points for the Gorilla men.
The PSU men used a 9-0 run to tie the game at 45-all midway through the second half, but the Blue Tigers responded with 13 unanswered to regain a foothold on the lead.
Starks got Pitt State within four points on a three-point play with 4:32 left in the game, but that was as close as the Gorilla men would get until the final minute of play.
Lincoln had three players finish in double figures, with Jaylon Smith scoring a team-high 23 points. Anthony Virdue had 12 points and O’Shai Clark scored 11 in the Blue Tiger win.
The Gorillas battled Missouri Western at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at John Lance Arena.
