WICHITA — Pittsburg High School senior Logan Benham closed out his career in Purple Dragons tennis with a fourth-place finish at state in the Kansas Class 5A Singles Tournament Saturday.

The fourth-place finish by Benham — along with Devin McAfee going 1-2 on Friday, beating Blue Valley Southwest's Ethan Renner 3-6, 6-3 (10-4) — earned the Purple Dragons a tie for ninth place as a team.

After winning two sets in the first three matches of the tournament on Friday, Benham took his first loss 6-1 and 6-0 on Saturday before losing in the consolation match, which put him in fourth place to end the tournament.

After a bye in the first round on Friday, Benham won his opening matchup 6-0, 6-2 against Arkansas City's Pierce Klaasen and went on for a second win against Goddard's Ian Farris by the scores of 6-1, 6-2. Benham took his first loss of the state tournament to Bishop Carol's Rodney Steven — who went on to win the state title in singles competition.

In the third-place match, Benham fell to Luke Howard of Goddard.
