OVERLAND PARK — The season officially concluded for the Pittsburg High School softball team after losing to St. James Academy 6-1 in the first round of the Kansas Class 5A Regional Softball Tournament Wednesday.
The Thunder jumped out to six-run lead in the middle innings and held off a late rally attempt by the Purple Dragons to win by five.
St. James Academy hit the scoreboard first, plating two in the second inning, one in the third and three in the fourth.
PHS totaled seven hits throughout and managed to push across one run in the seventh inning, but fell short of coming back from the six run deficit to tie the score.
Myla Turner was the offensive leader for the Purple Dragons, going 3 for 3 with one run scored.
Turner finished with a .383 batting average on the season to go along with three RBIs and 13 runs scored.
Aubree Beitzinger also had a good outing with two hits and an RBI.
Beitzinger finished the season with a batting average of .480, with 10 RBIs and led the team with 21 stolen bases out of the leadoff spot.
Caitlin Burdick pitched all six innings for Pittsburg in the loss, striking out three in her final start of the season.
Madison Vogel led the Dragons at the plate in 2016 with a .559 batting average, driving in a team-high 31 RBIs on the year.
