The Kansas High School State Boys’ Golf Tournaments got underway Monday, with several Crawford County athletes participating.
In team competition, the St. Mary’s Colgan golf team traveled to the Salina Country Club for Kansas Class 2A competition, while Pittsburg’s Jake Austin played at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course in the Kansas Class 5A State Meet. Girard’s Spencer Warner and Frontenac’s Riley Swigart took part in the Kansas Class 4A meet at Ulysses-Bentwood Golf Course.
The SMC golf team took third place at Salina, coming in with a score of 340. The Panthers were two points off second-place Republic County, who finished with 338. Sacred Heart scored a 310 to finish in first place. Sacred Heart’s 36-38—74 was good enough to earn him a first-place finish.
Colgan’s Bradley Beykirch finished in sixth place in individual scoring, shooting a 39-39—78.
Connor Wilbert finished in 17th place for the Panthers after scoring a 40-44—84.
Taking 25th for SMC was Jared Johnson, who came in with a round of 46-43-89.
Cal Marquardt’s score of 42-47—89 was good enough for 29th place, while Trevor Graham finished in 32nd place with a score of 48-43—91 for the Panthers.
Wrapping up SMC’s day, Garrett Bolinger finished with a 50-54—104 to finish in 61st place.
For the Purple Dragons, Austin finished with a round of 48-50—98 at Emporia Municipal Golf Course. He finished in 82nd place.
St. Thomas Aquinas won the team state title with a score of 299, while Maize South’s Wells Padgett took first in individual scoring with a round of 32-37—69.
In the Class 4A State Meet, Girard’s Warner scored a 43-43—86 to finish in a tie for 47th place, while Frontenac’s Swigart placed 88th with a score of 49-51—100.
Hays took first place in the meet as a team, shooting a 321. Chanute’s Clete Carlson finished in first place in individual standings with a round of 36-38—74.
