PITTSBURG — The Colgan Panthers defeated Inside Edge 11-8 in six innings at Jaycee Ballpark Friday morning in the Fort Scott Community College Summer Showcase Tournament.

Because of the severe storms in the Pittsburg area Thursday night, all of Friday’s games were shortened to six innings and a 1-hour and 45-minute time limit was enforced.

Colgan starter Simon Higginbotham went four strong innings, only allowing three hits and one earned run.

Offensively, the Panthers were led by Garret VanBecelaere, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Logan VanBecelaere, who went 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

After neither Colgan nor Inside Edge scored in the first, the Panthers’ offense came alive in the top of the second.

Dom Piccini led off with a single, but was picked off of first shortly after. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for leadoff hitter Garret VanBecelaere.

He gave the Panthers an early 3-0 lead with one swing of the bat, roping a fastball into the outfield gap, allowing all three Colgan runners to score.

Inside Edge managed to get a run back in the bottom of the second. It drew two walks and got two hits, but the run was scored on a passed ball.

The Panthers broke the game open by scoring four more times in the top of the third.

Simon Higginbotham reached on an error, and Tyler Brynds and Bryce Hutchins followed with infield singles.

Piccini drew a bases loaded walk to score Higginbotham, and Logan Lindsey also walked, to force in Brynds.

Logan VanBecelaere got the big hit of the inning, lining a fastball to right-center field, scoring Hutchings and Piccini. That gave Colgan a 7-1 advantage.

Inside Edge could not answer, thanks in large part to Higginbotham’s command and a solid Colgan defense. At one point, he retired seven hitters in a row, only allowing one hit over his last two innings of work.

Colgan added another run in the fourth – the result of two errors by Inside Edge’s second baseman – and two more in the fifth on a two-run double by Austin Lindsey.

That created a commanding 10-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame.

Inside Edge jumped all over Colgan’s bullpen in the home half of the fifth, getting 10 base runners on five hits and five walks.

Before the Panthers could get the third out, Inside Edge had plated seven runs, closing the gap to 10-8.

Colgan managed one more insurance run in the top half of the final inning.

Piccini led off with a single, moved to second on Drew Beck’s sacrifice bunt and ended up on third following Cade Simmons’ single.

Piccini scored on a passed ball and, on a heads-up hustle play, Simmons moved from first to third, where he would be stranded.

Matthew Lomshek came in and closed the door on Inside Edge, giving Colgan the 11-8 victory.
