PITTSBURG — On the heels of his top-10 finish at the KU Invitational Meet in Lawrence, Fort Scott’s Devin Brooks finished first at the Pittsburg Invitational Cross Country meet at the Four Oaks golf course.
Brooks completed the 5000-meter course in 16:15, approximately 10 seconds faster than his performance on the Pittsburg course in 2015. It was Brooks’ third individual title of the season.
Brooks was pushed throughout the race by Pittsburg’s Connar Southard and Baxter Spring’s Garrett Grant. Grant took an early lead before Brooks took near the one-mile mark. Brooks said the competition helped push him to the faster time.
“I ran at Rim Rock last Saturday and that was pretty good competition,” Brooks said. “And to run here with good competition, it helps. It helps me improve.”
Southard finished second in 16:36, with Grant taking third place in 16:41.
Southard led a strong showing by the Dragon team which took the team title for their home meet ahead of second place Fort Scott.
Renee Trout of Independence took the girls race in a dominating wire-to-wire victory. Trout took the course in a time of 19:29. It was Trout’s second individual title of the season. Trout said her one difficulty was nearly running off the course at one point during the race.
Pittsburg’s McKenzie Wilks finished second in 19:53, with Fredonia’s Jordan Smith taking third place in 20:23.
