PITTSBURG — Pittsburg and Girard volleyball are heading to state this weekend as the lone pair of Crawford County representatives.

The Purple Dragons punched their ticket to state for the first time in 13 years after winning the Class 5A Arkansas City Sub-State Tournament, while the Trojans earned a trip to state for the second time in three years following a win at the Kansas 4A DII Prairie View Sub-State Tournament.

Pittsburg has a 35-5 record, earning the third seed in the 5A tournament in Topeka. They are playing in Pool II of the bracket, and are joined by No. 2 Eisenhower (36-5), No. 6 Emporia (28-8) and No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas (31-10).

In Pool I of the state tournament are No. 1 Newton (38-4), No. 4 Lansing (33-5), No. 5 Shawnee Heights (33-6) and No. 8 St. James Academy (23-15).

The Purple Dragons open up their tournament with a 4:30 p.m. game against Emporia on court B on Friday, before taking on St. Thomas Aquinas at 6:30 p.m. and Eisenhower at 8:30 p.m. to close out the first day.

Girard holds a 30-7 record heading into the tournament. The Trojans earned the second seed, and are playing in Pool II of the bracket. Joining them are No. 3 Concordia (33-8), No. 6 Topeka-Hayden (30-11) and No. 7 Andale (27-12).

In Pool I, Holcomb’s 32-5 record was good enough to earn the first-overall seed. No. 4 Baxter Springs (31-8), No. 5 Nickerson (31-9) and No. 8 Jefferson West (22-12) round out the remaining teams in Pool I.

Girard starts its Class 4A DII state tournament off with an 8:30 a.m. matchup against Andale, before taking on Hayden at 10:30 a.m. on court B of the Bicentennial Center in Salina. The Trojans’ opening day comes to a close with a 1:30 p.m. match against Concordia.
