JASPER, Mo. — A pair of wins for the St. Mary’s-Colgan basketball teams over Jasper on Tuesday improved the records both Panther teams to 2-0 on the season, with the girls winning 51-44 followed by a 59-44 win by the boys in game two.
SMC GIRLS PULL AWAY IN FOURTH
A tightly-contested ballgame swung in favor of the Colgan girls’ team in the first matchup of the night, as the Panthers outscored the Eagles 22-11 in the final eight minutes of regulation and went on to pick up the 13-point win.
Both teams were going back and forth in the early going, but Jasper took control late in the second quarter and held a 24-19 advantage at the half.
The Panthers regrouped during the break and fought back to regain the lead at 35-33 by the end of the third.
Colgan kept the momentum going in the fourth quarter and finished strong to earn the win.
Cathy Farmer was the catalyst for the Panthers, contributing a team-high 16 points with nine rebounds and one assist.
Synclaire Borum also had a big hand in the win, scoring 10 points with two rebounds.
SMC BOYS KEEP EAGLES AT BAY
The Colgan boys’ team had control of the contest from beginning to end, jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead en route to earning the 59-44 win.
Following the eight consecutive points by the Panthers after the opening tip, Jasper pulled to within one point of the lead at 10-9 with a minute remaining in the first quarter and stayed within striking distance in the first half.
The Eagles trailed by five at the half, but were outscored 16-9 in the third quarter to fall behind 42-30.
SMC put the finishing touches on the win in the fourth quarter, expanding the lead to 48-34 with five minutes to play in regulation before winning 59-44.
Jeremiah Buche had the hot hand for the Panthers in the win, with 15 points, four rebounds, four steals and one assist.
Matthew Lomshek also had a good outing, earning a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and one assist.
The Panthers will host McDonald City at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
