FORT SMITH, Ark. — A 58-49 loss to Arkansas-Fort Smith on Monday in the final game before Christmas break dropped the Pittsburg State women’s basketball team to 8-3 on the season.
The Gorillas had a difficult time finding the range, shooting 27% from the floor as a team in the loss.
Pitt State took a 26-21 lead late in the second quarter after by trailing by four at the end of the first on the strength of 12 unanswered points.
The 12-0 run was highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Shelby Lopez and included three points by Meghan Maher, two by Athena Alvarado and one from Paige Imhoff.
UAFS regained the lead at 32-29 following a 10-3 run to begin the second half, but a 3-pointer by Lopez tied the game at 32-all with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
The Lions took control of the game in the fourth quarter, going up 48-43 after a 7-2 run in the opening minutes.
Arkansas went on to outscore PSU 17-8 in the final 10 minutes to get the win.
The Gorillas were struggling to find the bottom of the basket throughout, but Lopez kept them within striking distance by nailing four 3-pointers en route to scoring 16 points.
Brenlee McPherson was second on the team in scoring with 11 points to go along with a team-high six assists and five rebounds.
The Gorilla women will take on Oklahoma Wesleyan at 5 p.m. on December 27.
