CHEROKEE — It was a successful road trip for the Girard High School basketball teams, as the Trojans swept the Lancers with the girls’ team winning 58-27 and the boys 58-16.

Girard hit the ground running in game one of the night, taking control of the contest in the early going and never looking back en route to the 31-point victory.

“I’m very pleased with the outcome of this game,” GHS head coach Brad Herlocker said. “I felt like as far as execution, effort and focus, this was one of our best nights.”

After mounting a 16-8 advantage in the first quarter, the Lady Trojans extended it to 33-17 at the end of the second following a buzzer-beating shot by Sydnee Crain, who led the Trojans with 26 points in the win.

“I was proud of our girls even in the loss,” SHS head coach Derek Sanders said. “We hung in there early and I was pleased with the effort.”

The Girard boys’ team continued the momentum in game two of the night, leaving nothing to doubt in the 58-16 win.

“I was very pleased with our boys,” GHS head coach Rod Wescott said. “I thought we executed well and got another great win.”

With the win, the Trojans advanced to 10-4 on the season.

Girard will be in Independence at 6 p.m. on Friday.
