MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — It was an unfortunate conclusion to the weekend for the Pittsburg State softball team, as Barry University swept the Gorillas in two games 5-4 and 6-5 on Sunday.
After crossing the plate four times in the opening frame of game one, the Gorillas couldn’t keep up the offensive momentum in the loss.
PSU jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead on the strength of a three-run home run by Kristen Van Hoosen followed by a solo blast off the bat of Myka Hayward.
The Buccaneers cut the deficit in half on an RBI single and a passed ball in the bottom half of the inning, before narrowing it to 4-3 on a solo home run in the third.
Barry went on to take the lead in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run and kept the Gorillas quiet in the final two frames.
Bree Cornett was on the hook for the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts through 4.2 innings of work.
VanHoosen was the offensive catalysts, driving in three runs on one swing of the bat with a run scored.
The Buccaneers followed it up with another one-run victory in extra innings to complete the sweep.
With the score locked at 5-all, Barry walked off as winners after crossing the plate on an error in the eighth.
Pitt State took a two-run lead in the first inning following a defensive miscue, but Barry answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-2 advantage.
The Gorillas regained the lead at 5-4 in the third by way of a three-run home run by Kaity Kukowski.
Barry rallied to tie the game in the fifth on an RBI single before winning the game in the extra frame.
Cornett was the losing pitcher with four earned runs on five hits through three innings.
VanHoosen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while her teammate Kukowski drove in three runs with two walks and a run scored.
The Gorillas will be in Bentonville, Ark. to take on Maryville at 9 a.m. on Friday.
