PITTSBURG — The St. Mary’s Colgan baseball team fell to visiting Neosho 8-1 in the season opener on Wednesday.
Neosho piled on the runs early, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and held off a late rally by the Panthers to earn the win.
“I just think our inexperience showed,” SMC head baseball Mike Watt said. “We only have two players returning with a lot of experience and we just didn’t execute defensively very well. We have a lot of little things to clean up, but that’s expected first game of the season.”
Neosho were firing on all cylinders in the early going, plating three runs in the opening frame before adding five more runs in the fifth to make it an eight-run advantage.
The Panthers stranded several runners on base throughout the contest, but gained some momentum in the seventh after Kannon Keller advanced to first on a dropped third strike to begin the final frame and came around to score on a defensive miscue.
Cade Simmons, Bryce Hutchins and Parker Wydick each finished with a hit apiece.
The SMC baseball and softball teams will host Frontenac at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
