PITTSBURG — Pittsburg State baseball and the University of Central Oklahoma traded 9-3 victories on Monday.

Game one Pitt State 9, Central Oklahoma 3

Pittsburg State opened the game with one run, but the Bronchos would knot the score at 1-1 in the third inning. The Gorillas responded with a two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth and sixth innings each to insure the victory.

“I thought we made a good adjustment in the fourth inning by shortening our swings,” said Pitt State baseball coach Tom Myers. “That allowed us to get on base, and it eventually led to some flat ball that drove in runs.”

Joven Afenir and Hunter Clanin went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs each. Colton Pogue drew three walks and scored two runs. Andrew Vogelbaugh, Cody White, and Jake Durossette chipped in one hit each for the Gorillas.

Cooper Garner got the win in relief, allowing only two runs and four hits while striking out three in three innings.

Hunter’s two-run RBI triple in the fifth helped power the Gorillas in the midpoint of the game. Afenir notched his RBIs in the fourth and sixth innings respectively to help extend the Gorilla lead.

Game two Central Oklahoma 9, Pitt State 3

The Bronchos opened the nightcap with four runs in the first frame. Pitt State closed the gap in the third, scoring three runs to bring the score to 5-3.

UCO would shut out the Gorilla offense the rest of the way to secure the win.

White went 2-for-4 in game two. Pogue and Afenir also added in two hits each. Josh Whisler and Brett Macary finished with one RBI a piece.

Macary singled home White in the third to open the Gorilla scoring. Durossette would come home on a Broncho error, and Whisler earned a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Macary for what would end up being Pitt State’s last run.

Pitt State travels to Joplin, Missouri to take on Missouri Southern at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
