GIRARD — The Girard Trojan Softball team completed their undefeated season on Thursday against Labette County, clinching the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League Softball Championship. The Lady Trojans swept the Grizzlies 10-0 in the opener and 9-4 in game two.

“We played really well the first game. Second game we played well the first five innings and finished flat,” said Girard coach Jim Vinze. “ We talked about it after the game, and the girls know that with playoffs coming soon we have to play hard all seven innings or our season will be over with.”

Game one Girard 10, Labette County 0

After a two-run first inning, Girard pounced on the Grizzlies with four runs in the second frame.

Jaylynn Jenkin’s RBI single to center field and Sydnee Crain’s two-run RBI double extended the lead to 5-0.

Shaylun Grosstephan added in an RBI single to right field to make the scoreline 6-0.

After a quiet third inning, scoring picked back up in the fourth, led by an RBI single from Crain. Shelby Smith scored Crain later in the inning on a line drive single, adding to the Lady Trojan cushion.

Grosstephan’s two-run RBI double in the bottom of the fifth clinched the 10-0 win.

Smith threw five shut out innings from the circle.

Game two Girard 9, Labette County 4

Girard scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to lead them to victory.

Marci Heatherly sparked the Lady Trojans in the third with a RBI single. Makaila Ausemus followed with a two-run RBI double.

Jenkins, Grosstephan and Jacey Murphy also hit RBIs in the frame.

Labette County got a home run in the fourth frame to help close the gap, but were unable to claw back into the game.


Girard will host the 4A Division II regional on Tuesday. Girard will play Wichita-Trinity Academy at 4:30 p.m.
