PITTSBURG — Fresh off of a close defeat in week five, St. Mary’s-Colgan responded with a 70-15 blowout win over visiting Yates Center on Thursday night in Pittsburg.
The Panthers scored early and often against the Wildcats. Kash Marietta got the Panthers on the board early in the first quarter with a 42-yard touchdown rush.
The Colgan defense forced a stop on the ensuring Wildcat drive and Panther quarterback Cade Simmons took advantage, finding speedy wide receiver Cal Marquardt on a back-shoulder throw for a 17-yard touchdown.
Fullback Domenico Bevilacqua took a run up the middle of the Yates Center defense for a 12-yard score with just under seven minutes to go in the first quarter.
Colgan added the extra point to push the lead to 21-0.
With 1:23 remaining in the first quarter, Simmons called his own number on the read-option and rushed for a 21-yard touchdown.
Yates Center’s Thayne Smith showed his speed on a 57-yard rush, taking a stretch play down the sideline for a touchdown, cutting the lead to 28-7.
Marietta responded with :27 ticks remaining in the first quarter, returning the ensuring kickoff for a touchdown to give Colgan a 35-7 lead at the end of the first.
Matthew Lomshek got into the scoring action in the second quarter, rumbling for a five-yard touchdown plunge.
Midway in the second quarter, Blaise Dawson rushed into the endzone from six-yards out to add to the Colgan advantage.
It wouldn’t be long before Dawson would strike again for Colgan, pushing the lead to 56-7 with eight minutes left in the third on a 24-yard rushing touchdown.
Bevilacqua would get his second rushing touchdown in the second quarter, pushing the score to 63-7 before half.
Backup quarterback Derek Vanbecelaere rushed for a 48-yard touchdown in the third quarter for the last Panther score of the night.
