Jimmie Mengarelli

Jimmie Mengarelli, 71, of Girard, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2025. 

Jimmie was born Jan. 7, 1954, at rural Girard, a son of Augustine and Cleo (Gilbert) Mengarelli.  He grew up in Girard and graduated from Girard High School in 1972. He attended Fort Scott Community College before receiving his Bachelor of Animal Science degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. 

Jimmie married Ann Leach on Oct. 22, 1977, in the United Methodist Church in Farlington. 

Ann and Jimmie made their home at rural Girard and Jimmie worked as a 4-H extension agent for Crawford County from 1985 until retiring in 2016. He was actively involved as a livestock superintendent for the Kansas State Fair, and he enjoyed catering for friends and family. 

Jimmie was a board member of Crawford County Farm Bureau Association, USD #248 School Board, Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Greenbush, the Crawford County Fair Board, and the Farlington United Methodist Church board. He was the director of Breakfast of Champions in Girard from 1998 until 2009.  

Jimmie enjoyed his family, friends, food, raising livestock, and working with area youth. He was dedicated to serving his community. 

He was a member of the Farlington United Methodist Church. 

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Ann, of the home, are his sons, Dustin Mengarelli, and his wife, Ashleigh, of Topeka and Lonnie Mengarelli, and his wife, Hannah, of Hepler. His daughters, Abbi Huber, and her husband, Kevin, of Arma, Kelli Mengarelli of Arma, and Joni Kirwan, and her husband, Wyatt, of Imperial, Nebraska. Grandchildren, nieces and nephews. His sisters, Barbara Babcock of Arma, Beverly Vogel, and her husband, Dick, of Topeka, and Rachelle Mengarelli of Arma. Sister-in-law, Doris Mengarelli of Prescott, Arizona. Brother-in-law, Dwight Gorrell of Centerville, Kansas. 

Jimmie was preceded in death by a brother, August Mengarelli, a sister, Roselle Gorrell, and a brother-in-law, Ed Babcock. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Tony Stark officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery northeast of Girard. 

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home where friends may call after 2 p.m., Thursday. 

Memorials are suggested to the Jimmie Mengarelli 4-H Memorial Fund, and these may be left at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home, 518 W St. John, Box 258, Girard, 66743.
