LOCALIZATION
US-HURRICANE-WATER-INFRASTRUCTURE-LOCALIZE IT: Hurricane Helene severely damaged drinking water utilities in the Southeast. Western North Carolina was especially hard hit. Flooding tore through the city of Asheville’s water system, destroying so much infrastructure that officials said repairs could take weeks. The Environmental Protection Agency said that, as of Thursday, about 136,000 people in the Southeast were served by a nonoperational water provider and more than 1.8 million were living under a boil water advisory. Hurricane Helene highlights vulnerable water infrastructure in other places in the U.S. We offer potential reporting threads and questions for looking at water systems in your area. Find the latest Localize It guides.
US-MED--CONDOM USE-LOCALIZE IT: Condom use is down among sexually active teens and young adults. Is this the end of condoms? Not exactly. But it does have some public health experts thinking about how to help young people have safe sex, be aware of their options and get tested for STIs regularly. We provide data resources and suggested reporting threads. See our Localize It guides here.
US--MED-ADDICTION TREATMENT-METHADONE-LOCALIZE IT: Methadone is a treatment drug for opioid use disorder, but access is limited because patients must get it from special clinics called opioid treatment programs, or OTPs. These clinics are regulated by federal and state rules that, until recently, required most patients to take their medication while supervised during daily clinic visits. The U.S. government permanently relaxed some regulations around methadone and OTPs this year. Oct. 2 is when clinics mustcomply with the new federal rules — unless they’re in a state with more restrictive regulations. Find the latest Localize It guides.
US--CITIZEN DEMOGRAPHICS-LOCALIZE IT: The U.S. Census Bureau last week released new data, including updated information about citizen voting-age populations across the country, which represents U.S. citizens aged 18 and older. We link to a spreadsheet that shows the demographics of citizen voting-age populations from both the 2019 and 2023 American Community Survey, 1-year estimates. We provide tips for reporting on this data. Find the latest Localize It guides.
