Kelly keeps the lights on

Editor’s note: This is another in a series of brief profiles of the people who bring you the Morning Sun each day.

Some days she’s the glue that holds it all together. Kelly Mitchell is the person at the Morning Sun who pays the bills, receives the payments, keeps track of the time sheets, orders the supplies and pretty much makes sure this 137-year-old newspaper is functioning day-to-day.

Kelly is a proud Southeast Kansan. She jokes that she was born on a September Sunday morning, the same year that the Barbie Doll made its debut (1959). Kelly grew up in Weir, attending elementary school there and graduating from Southeast High School. She went on to earn an associate’s degree in accounting from Labette Community College.

Kelly worked in the printing industry for 30 years before coming to the Morning Sun. She says she loves numbers, “which helps make my job so enjoyable.”

And while she may love her job, there’s nothing that can compete with the joy she gets from family. Kelly has one daughter, Shanon, who with her husband, Caleb, have two sons, Cash and Wyatt.

“Family is very important to me,” Kelly said. “I’m a big supporter of my two grandsons’ sporting events, which include football, baseball, basketball and wrestling. We keep busy throughout the year.”

Kelly said one of the best things about working at the Morning Sun is the crew of people she works with.

“They always say it is the people you work with that makes the job and I can attest that to be true,” Kelly said. “The Morning Sun has a great group of people who care about this paper and work very hard to keep our local community informed and connected. I am very proud to be a part of this organization.”
