US--ELECTION 2024-FEMALE LEGISLATORS-LOCALIZE IT: Women will for the first time make up a majority of state legislators in Colorado and New Mexico next year, but at least 13 states saw losses in female representation after the November election, according to a count released Thursday by the Rutgers Center for American Women and Politics. While women will fill a record number of state legislative seats in 2025, the overall uptick will be slight, filling just over third of legislative seats. Races in some states are still being called. We break down the states with increased and decreased representation, offer reporting suggestions and provide an embed code for an interactive bar chart that looks at the numbers in each state. US--TRUMP STAFF PICKS-LOCALIZE IT: President-elect Donald Trump is starting to fill key posts in his second administration, putting an emphasis so far on aides and allies who were his strongest backers during the 2024 campaign. Among his picks are Florida Sen. Marco Rubio for secretary of state, former Democratic House member Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for secretary of health and human services. We break down his selections and their ties to U.S. states. Find the latest Localize It guides.
US--PHILANTHROPY-VOLUNTEERING-LOCALIZE IT: A new survey released Tuesday from the U.S. Census Bureau and AmeriCorps shows 28.3% or 75.8 million people in the U.S. volunteered with a nonprofit between Sept. 2022 and Sept. 2023. That is a rebound since COVID-19 public health shutdowns tanked participation by almost 7 percentage points to 23.2% in 2021, the last time the survey was conducted. It is not a full return to pre-pandemic rates of volunteerism. Nearly 47% of people in Utah volunteered, making it the state with the highest rate of volunteerism. A couple of states like Rhode Island and Nevada were below 20% participation. We provide reporting suggestions, dataso you can see where your state ranks, and an embeddable bar chart showing the rate of formal volunteerism for people in different education and income groups. Many teens worry about how their lives could change once he becomes president. Trump’s administration can swiftly start work on one major change: It can exclude transgender students from Title IX protections. Those affect school policies on students’ use of pronouns, bathrooms and locker rooms. We provide additional context, reporting questions and resources, and two embeddable graphics looking at AP VoteCast responses to questions about transgender rights.
