A solid crowd came out to JayCee Ballpark to watch Pittsburg Post 64’s opening round contest against Newton in the Kansas AAA American Legion State baseball tournament late Wednesday night.
They, in turn, were treated to a virtual hit parade as Pittsburg belted out six home runs — including three from third baseman Adam McCormick — to knock off Newton 22-4.
In addition to the five long balls, Pittsburg had five doubles and two triples to cap their 21-hit game.
And Zach White set the tone early after he led off the game with a bomb that bounced off Catalpa Street over the left-field fence and put Post 64 up 1-0.
Pittsburg added two more runs on an RBI single from Willie Watt and a fielder’s choice hit by Tanner Smith.
“We came out after a week-and-a-half and really put the screws to it,” said McCormick, who has never hit three home runs in a game prior to Wednesday. “After Zach got us started, everything clicked for us from there.
In addition, Post 64 head coach Mike Watt, who has coached several high school state championship teams at St. Mary’s-Colgan, said that he has never coached a game that he can remember where his team had six home runs.
“It all really started with Zach,” Watt said. “I have said before that hitting is contagious and it just kept going.”
After that for Post 64 as Jordan Elliott singled into center field and Stu Jeck — batting in the No. 9 slot — belted a two-run home run down the right-field line, putting Pittsburg up 5-0.
White kept the hitting alive with a follow-up double opposite field into right.
Two batters later, Jesse Watt drilled a two-run shot 350 feet to right center.
After McCormick doubled to left, he was driven home by a Willie Watt single to give Post 64 an 8-0 lead.
Newton was able to get a run across in the second when Kevin Ronen scored on a wild pitch.
But, Pittsburg went right back to work in the top of the third when Elliott doubled home Nick Whetzell to start the inning.
Jeck came back and got his third RBI with a triple to right field that scored Elliott.
That put Jeck just one double short of the cycle.
That seemed to work just fine for Spear who came out and struck out the side to end the third inning, racking up a total of seven strikeouts in the first three innings before being relieved by Joe Saia.
In the fourth, McCormick came through with his second home run — this on over the scoreboard in right field — that scored three runs and gave Pittsburg a 17-1 lead. Jesse Watt singled in the inning, leaving him a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.
Newton picked up two more runs to start the fourth when Ronen belted a 2-run shot to cut Post 64’s lead to 17-3.
Jeck had a shot at a double but struck out to end the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Jesse Watt hit a single to lead off the inning for Pittsburg, but McCormick came up and smacked a double — his second of the game — down the right field line.
Pittsburg’s hitting in the sixth gave Jeck one more shot at a double to complete the cycle, but he drew a two-out walk.
McCormick had one more home run in him — a solo shot in the top of the seventh — to cap a 5-for-5 performance with six RBI and five runs scored.
“The big thing is that it really doesn’t surprise me because I know we are capable,” Mike Watt said. “I just hope it carries over for the rest of the tournament.”
Pittsburg will face Manhattan in the winner’s bracket at approximately 7:30 p.m. tonight.
