Nonetheless, Monica Soper smacked an RBI double to score Breezie Trytek to score the winning run as St. Mary’s-Colgan defeated Frontenac 1-0 in the first game of a softball doubleheader at Cheryl Stice Field on Friday night.
In the second game, Frontenac belted out 14 runs on nine hits to top the Panthers 14-9 to earn the split.
In the first game, both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when Breezie Trytek singled with two outs for Colgan. Monica Soper followed with a double that was fielded by Emily Barto. Barto made the cutoff throw to Darci McLaren who threw to catcher Hannah Ketterman but the tag was not in time and Trytek was called safe for the winning run.
The Raiders managed just four hits off of Colgan starter Katie Hayes.
“We faced Spencer on Monday and a decent pitcher with Baxter and this was just a defensive game,” said Frontenac head coach Cassie Buche. “You just can’t win a game with just four hits.
“We didn’t do anything wrong but you just can’t win with that many hits.”
On the flip side, the Panthers only got five hits off of Raider pitcher Jena Standlee, who also gave up just one walk.
“It took us a while to adjust our bats,” said Colgan head coach Bill Verga.
In the second game, the Raiders used a big seven-run second inning to get past Colgan.
The scoring started when Breanna Rhuems hit an RBI triple to score Melissa Seward.
“We had two outs and that was a big hit,” Buche said. “That really started it off for us.”
It was that second inning that paced the Raiders.
“We swung the bats well in the first game but it was right at them but they started to fall in the second,” Buche said. “We make the defense work and that is what we did in that inning. We made them shift and that is what we will stick to.”
Colgan did battle back when Ashley Werner smacked a two-run single in the bottom of the second. She also hit a three-run triple in the bottom of the third and Allison McCormick connected on a solo home run in the sixth inning but it was not enough to overcome the Raiders’ second inning offensive production.
“It is tough to spot any team that many runs but the girls never gave up and they fought it out to the end,” Verga said. “I was happy for McCormick to get her shot because she has been hitting the ball very well all year.”
