For the last three series, Riverton head softball coach Brian Mitchell has been looking for that one big inning where his offense breaks out and provides a spark for his team.
On Tuesday, the Rams found it.
In fact, they found two of them at the expense of the St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers in a 13-1 win in the second game of a Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League doubleheader at Cheryl Stice Field.
In the first game, Riverton had the same troubles they had the previous three series and could not hit the ball as Colgan scored four runs in the first and made it stick in a 5-2 win in game one.
“We have been looking to string hits together to drive in runs and get those big innings and it finally happened in the second game,” Mitchell said. “Hopefully we have turned the corner and we can keep doing those things.”
The hits in the second game did not come until late in the fifth inning.
Colgan tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth after Annie Dellasega doubled with two outs and Allison McCormick followed with an RBI double to tie the game.
But in the top of the fifth, the Rams’ bats exploded for five runs on four hits including a three-run home run from Shantell Jewett off of Colgan starter Katie Hayes.
Prior to the Jewett home run, Haleigh Sills smacked a two-run double to right scoring Megan Wells and Cheslyn Mitchell then Brittany Perry singled and Jewett crushed a Hayes delivery over the left-center field fence to put the Rams up 6-1.
Jewett later scored on an error by Hayes when she dove for a ball hit by Dalaynee Ludwig and it fell out of her glove.
But the Rams were not done.
In the sixth, Wells led off with a single and it was followed by three more singles from Mitchell, Sills and an RBI single from Perry. Jewett picked up her fourth RBI with a walk then Whitney Shafer crushed a ball to right that scored three more runs.
“They (Riverton) found all of the spots,” said Colgan head coach Bill Verga. “They just washed down after they started to hit and we had some mental errors and we started to break down after that.”
Riverton picked up one more run in the inning after Wells singled home Kelsey Anderson with a shot that rolled into left field.
All-in-all, the Rams had 14 hits in the second game, nine of which came in the fifth and sixth inning.
“We have been talking about getting those timely hits and someone stepping up and getting those and we got them tonight,” Mitchell said. “It is going to be a good road if we continue to do that.”
In the first game, the Panthers knocked in four runs in the first inning and held on for a 5-2 win.
Monica Soper and Kirby Kelly each led off the first with a pair of singles then Dellasega singled before McCormick picked up an RBI single.
Two batters later, Hayes drove in two runs with a triple to left field.
That lead was enough for Hayes as she held the Rams to just two runs — both of which came in the second inning — on four hits.
“I was very happy that we were able to hold them with that lead,” Verga said. “We were able to put the bat on the ball.”
The Panthers had chances to add more to their lead by leaving 11 baserunners stranded in the first game, including bases loaded in the fifth.
“That hurt and I was a little disappointed in that but we were able to still score and hold them off like that was very good,” Verga said. “Riverton is a good team and I was not sure that four runs would be enough.”
