Mabel Bartley

Mabel Lucile (Gough) Bartley, age 98, died on March 4, 2024, at Homestead Assisted Living of Girard, KS.

She was born January 19, 1926, at home on East 4th Street, where Carrington House is now located in Pittsburg, Kansas. She was the daughter of Elizabeth (Leker) Gough and John Gough.

Mabel graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1944. She attended Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) as a Home Economics major. She worked at the Parsons Army Ammunition Plant after high school.

She married Warren G. Bartley on August 8, 1948, and started their married life moving to Dodge City, Kansas. In Dodge City, she worked as a cook to the farm hands and Warren worked on the farm. They returned to Pittsburg and she worked at Annshire Garment Company, Pitt Plastics, and in the alterations department at Ramsey Department Store.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Opolis, KS-Quilters Guild, and Sewing Guild. She also assisted the Crawford County Extension office with 4H sewing projects. When her kids were in school she was a Brownie leader and a stamp lady (sold stamps for the purchase of savings bonds) at Lincoln Elementary School.

She had two children: daughter, Janet Eileen, and her husband, James A. (Jim) Machetta of Lakehills, Texas, and son, Eldon Dean Bartley and his wife, Kolette of Liberal, Missouri.

She is also survived by six grandchildren: Amber Machetta, Lakehills, TX; Carisa Machetta, Lakehills, TX; James Machetta II and wife Carole of Mountain Home, TX; Kerri and husband, Kirby Brunk, Arma, KS; Jessica and husband, Aaron Amershek of Arbor Vitae, WI; and Lucas Bartley of Belton, MO. Additional survivors include 15 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild due May 2024.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, her parents, and great-granddaughter, Zoe Diane Amershek. Along with her four brothers-Glenn, Leland, Marvin, and Harold.

Family will receive friends for visitation on March 6 at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Bath Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS. Burial will follow at Crocker Cemetery south of Pittsburg.
