Robert P. "Bob" Grant, 84, of Scammon, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2022, at the Medicalodge in Columbus.

He was born June 2, 1938, in Moorhead, Iowa, the son of Robert M. and Mardell (Anderson) Grant.

On April 18, 1959, he was united in marriage to Linda Westervelt. She survives him of the home.

Bob worked at BF Goodrich in Miami, Oklahoma, for many years. He also worked in construction, where he was self-employed. In his retirement, he worked at Josie's Restaurant in Scammon.

He was a longtime member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Scammon. Bob also coached Little League baseball for 40-plus years. He coached in Cherokee and the American Legion in Cherokee and Columbus, and also Babe Ruth in Columbus.

He was a devoted husband, dad, grandfather, coach, and mentor. He was known as Papa, not only to his beloved family, but to generations throughout the community. He never missed the grandkids' games, no matter where they were played. He knew no strangers — anywhere he went, he would find someone to talk to. He was a man who believed in hard work, fixing things yourself, and never leaving a person in need of help. A sweet and caring, yet strong and tough man who always put others before himself.

Additional survivors include his children Kim Mesplay of Pittsburg, Kandi Heflin of Columbus, Kendall (Jodie) Grant of Columbus, Kerry (Michael) Dainty of Scammon; siblings Jack (Lela) Grant of Scammon, Jerry (Deloris) Grant of Scammon, Valorie Lasater of Independence, Missouri, Vicky Laird of Columbus, Lynny (Marquita) Grant of Overland Park, Kansas; nine grandchildren: Abby Adamson, Addy Collins, Jennifer Fields, Jake Dainty, Justin Rogers, Zack Dainty, Montana Grant, Rylie Keller, Morgan Lero; 12 great-grandchildren (with three on the way); along with a bonus grandchild Allie Mussa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill and Mick Grant; one sister, Sharon Goben; and a granddaughter, Amy Mesplay.

A Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, at the St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Scammon with Father Jeremy Huser as celebrant. Interment will be at St. Bridget's Cemetery. Condolences may be left at www.bathnaylor.com.
