1954-2024

Loving husband, best father and most amazing “Pops” ever.

C.E. Starkweather, 69, of Pittsburg, KS passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 13, 2024.

He was born on December 13, 1954 to Marvin and Marcella (Allen) Starkweather. He grew up in Columbus, KS where he was a member of the high school band, basketball team and football team, earning a place in the Columbus Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He went on to “major in football” at Fort Scott Community College (2006 Inductee to FSCC Greyhound Hall of Fame) and Wichita State University, where he met his wife Sally. It was love at first sight July 18th; and they were married October 3rd. After both graduating from Wichita State, they moved to Pittsburg, KS.

C.E. welcomed with his wife their daughter Jana into the world in 1986. He supported her in all her activities and travels, rarely missing an event.

Working for PittCraft printing for over 25 years allowed C.E. and his family to enjoy VIP access to Chiefs and Royals games.

C.E.'s favorite role was that of a grandparent. He treasured time with Patrick and William and loved being called Pops and Marshmallow man.

C.E. grew up in faith at Center Christian Church in rural Columbus, KS. For the past 30 years, C.E. was a member of the First Christian Church in Pittsburg. While an active member, he sang in the choir, drove the bus and kept the grounds.

Anyone that knew C.E. and Sally knew that they loved the lake, and enjoyed sailing, surfing, canoeing, and hanging out on Bob the swimming pad with their grandkids.

C.E. will always be remembered for his optimistic attitude, calm demeanor and the laughs he has given us. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Pat Smith. He is survived by his wife, Sally of the home, daughter, Jana Hickman (Dan) of Galena, grandsons, Patrick and William, and brother Kent Starkweather of Broken Arrow, OK.

Cremation arrangements are being handled by Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 20th at 10 AM at First Christian Church in Pittsburg, KS, with the service immediately following. We have appreciated the love, support, and prayers over the years. Because we were blessed with a selfless gift of a new kidney from Mary in 2020, C.E. was given quality of life to spend with his grandsons, family and friends.  Please consider being an organ donor. For more information visit Organdonor.gov. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to support the music department at First Christian Church.
