Donald “Dean” McGown

Donald “Dean” McGown, 90, of Frontenac, Kansas, former longtime resident of Girard and McCune area, died at 8:29 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Pittsburg Care and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Mr. McGown was born August 13, 1933 in McCune, Kansas the son of Clyde McPherson and Gladys Elizabeth Mullen McGown. Dean was a retired farmer and lived in the McCune and Girard area most of his life. He was raised in McCune and graduated from McCune High School. He later attended K-State University. He farmed in the McCune area most of his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He raised catfish. He also worked as a Deputy Sheriff for the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and later as a reserve deputy.

He married Raemae Lee Stewart on January 30, 1953 in McCune, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 24, 1997. He later married Geneva A. Sowers on November 29, 1967 in Girard. She preceded him in death March 15, 2019.

He was a member of the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Girard, Kansas. Survivors include five children, Gary (Cheryl) McGown of Windsor, Colorado, Steven (Anita) McGown of McCune, Kansas, Karen Sue (Steve) McFarland of Pittsburg, Kansas, Helen (Jim) Cherry of Farlington, Kansas, and Tammy (Robert) Sowers-White of Miami, Oklahoma, eight grandchildren, and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, a son, Kent Wayne McGown, four sisters, Martha Spease, Ailene Parsons, Rosalie Crandell, and Geneieve Ringer, and four brothers, Paul, Art, Murlin, and Gene McGown.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, January 15, 2024 at the St. Michaels Catholic Church in Girard, Kansas with Father Josh Evans as the Celebrant. Burial will be at the Girard Cemetery. Rosary will be said at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 14, by Father Daniel Vacca at the Bedene Funeral Home at Arma where the family will receive friends until 3:30 p.m. following the rosary. The family suggests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Oakview Estates Residential Center Activity Fund in Frontenac or St. Jude’s Hospital. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E. Washington, Box 621, Arma, Kansas 66712.
